Service of the Lord

She drops her fare into the box
To teach the kids from down the block
Wide-eyed, but innocent they're not

Back home, the end of her long day
She falls upon her knees to pray
For strength to help them find their way

In the service of the Lord
To help them be the best they can
In the service of the Lord
Each girl a woman, boy a man
In the service of the Lord

A young man steps out on his own
And for the first time is alone
Exposed to elements unknown

A poor decision, nicotine
Triggers faults inside a gene
That leave him tied to a machine

At the mercy of the Lord
His options quickly running out
At the mercy of the Lord
No time to learn what life's about
At the mercy of the Lord

A man and woman chance to meet
He likes her smile, she thinks he's sweet
And soon he sweeps her off her feet

The pair united soon are three
A child completes the family
A love so strong that all must see

Giving thanks unto the Lord
For every wonder life can bring
Giving thanks unto the Lord
Each summer, winter, fall and spring
Giving thanks unto the Lord

But on this whirling blue-green sphere
Abroad or home, we live in fear
In our own yard, the troops draw near

This global theatre holds no love
When all are hawks, with not one dove
In every land, Bush comes to shove

In the service of the Lord
He's dropping bombs and lying
Beating ploughshares into swords
With thousands dead & dying

And still folks worship at that 'House of White'
which leaves so many orphans crying
As blood is poured
In the service of the Lord
